Glucosamine sulfate is a chondroprotective agent which helps protect the joints and maintain normal synovial fluid and cartilage.³ In fact, it is one of the most important building blocks of both cartilage and joint fluid. Numerous studies have proven the effectiveness of glucosamine, most often in combination with chondroitin sulfate.^4,5 One study showed that 1500 mg of glucosamine will exceed the pain-reducing benefits of 1200 mg of ibuprofen within 8 weeks, while also yielding better mobility and less swelling.⁶

Chondroitin sulfate is an important structural component of cartilage and provides much of its resistance to compression.^7,8 Chondroitin sulfate has been shown to reach the joints when given in oral doses so it can bolster the production and function of healthy cartilage. Multiple placebo-controlled studies have shown improvements in joint function and pain in people given chondroitin sulfate for the treatment of osteoarthritis.^9,10,11,12 When present in adequate amounts, cartilage acts as a natural shock absorber within the joint. Without a good supply of chondroitin sulfate and synovial fluid, joint tissues may become thinner, drier, and more fragile.
